I recommend you try the new donor report, Lybunt report, Sybunt report, Upgrade/Downgrade report, etc. There is also a donor giving analysis dashboard which has all of this in one report but it has flaws!!! - you can ONLY run it on a full year period such as this calendar...

An option do a summary query to pull donor whose gifts totaled $500 or over in 2006. Then you would use that query in the LYBUNT report in analytical reports which is designed to show donors gifts last year but not this. See if it gets you what you need.
