Implementing Raisers Edge currently with a question about negative gift amounts (refunds)

Has anyone had to deal with migrating negative gift amounts. Our current Access db simply lists the item as a normal gift but has a negative amount. When I go into RE and try to add a gift as a negative number it won't allow it. Our situation is that we can actually give a refund for gift a few months after the original gift has been made so the books for that month maybe balanced and closed Currently our negative gift would exist as simply negative and the corresponding account in this months books would be adjusted as our current database records show.

RE doesn't seem to be able to handle theat negative number any ideas???

I am not sure I understand the Access database you are using but RE does not take negative gifts.  What it has instead is a gift adjustment feature that you can post an adjustment to a gift (such as bringing the amount to $0 for a refund).  This is much better than a negative gift as the original amount is removed from calculations so if you are looking for donors with gifts over $50 - that donor no longer shows.  If you kept the original $50 gift and added a -$50 the donor would be included in your query which you probably would not want.

Adjustments are posted at the time they are entered for the reason you stated - the month the original gift came in may be closed - so it goes on your financial books as a -$50 GL entry in this month but does not show in a gift record as a -$50 gift.  Am I making sense?
