We're trying to decide how we'd like RE to auto-generate ID numbers. None of the delivered options provide a format anywhere near our current format, and we're concerned about having five or six different number styles as IDs. Our current format is a seven digit number of individuals, and a seven digit number plus a "C" for corporations. How do other institutions handle this issue during conversion?
We recently converted from Results Plus to Raiser's Edge. The ID numbers from Results Plus were in the 113000 range, so I decided to start Raiser's Edge with 200000. It is helpful to see that when the number is before 200000 we know it came from the previous system. We also distinguish our different types of records through the constituency codes. That seems to be working. You might want to add constituency codes for Individuals and Corporations and add the code for corporations wherever you have "C" at the end of your ID.
We had the exact same format (7#s, C+7#s for corps) in our old system. We converted the old ID# as an alias (We can then search on it when looking up constituents) and just had RE auto-assign consistent IDs for all records. This has worked out well as all of our RE IDs are the same format and we no longer need a C in the corp IDs because those are listed as key indicator- organization in RE. The beauty of it is that when we are working off of pre-conversion data, we can still look up constituents based on the old ID # and we can import new data using the old IDs as the import ID.
Hope this is helpful.
We are starting from scratch and have never used any ID number to designate our constituents. I am going to be importing data from a CSV file format into Raisers Edge, so I wanted to make sure I read the KnowledgeBase article correctly that if you do not have an Import ID, the system will automatically assign an Import ID? I just need to include a blank column with the header ImpID and the system will create those? Before I do this, I need to configure how the Constituent ID will populate, correct? Thanks for the help!
An Idea would be to create a column in your csv file and assign numbers there. When the data is imported the number will already be there. Then when you start adding constituents to RE, you can set your automatic number to a number higher than what you've imported.
