    What do others do?

I was curious about how other hospital foundations handle this, if at all.   First we are fully intergrated with Financial Edge and Second, non philanthropic monies come to us and get's entered into Raiser's Edge so that it can then inturn be posted to Financial Edge.

Ok, Having said that, non philanthropic gifts here are comprised of hospital employees paying for classes, but also, because we manage grants, any indirect costs associated with the grants are entered into RE to be then posted over to FE, also interest earned from bank accounts where that money goes into our operating fund and is entered into a record titled with the same name as the Foundation (which of course makes it look like we are a giving entity to ourselves - wreaks havoc on reporting too)  We have coding that signifies what is charitable as opposed to not.  But my question is, do other hospital foundation have this same issue?  if you manage money that isnt charitable what do you do? Long story short, we dont collect the money and immediately turn it over to each dept cost center for them to manage...not even wanting to go there right now as to why we dont but  without knowing Financial Edge, is it possible to actually enter said non philanthropic gifts directly into a constituent record through Financial Edge, that way it does not show up in Raiser's Edge?

Let me know if  need to elaborate for a clearer picture.  I would love to hear both sides, those who use financial edge as well as those who dont.  Thanks.  In the end I'm trying to make the case of Not entering in non philanthropic gifts just so that they have the ability to be posted over to the financial edge, Im hoping that it can be entered directly into financial edge but i get the typical responses ranging from "that's how it's always been done" to just plain "NO".

Maryann - We do not have FE; our Finance office uses Lawson. And we do not enter these kinds of monies in RE. The Foundation/Raisers Edge strictly tracks philantrhopic money only. So if it is not considered a gift it goes directly to Finance, not through us. I'm not clear on why you'd want non-charitable gifts in FE either? Good Luck!

    Re: What do others do?

This is the response I get in regarding entering non philanthropic contributions into Raiser's Edge.

" I know this probably doesn't make a lot of accounting sense to you, but  yes, there is a reason that we key all funds into the Re system, and the reason being is that for us to totally reconcile funds between the two accounts, this step is necessary.  There was a lot of bridge building to get us to this point ( total integration/interfacing between the two system.  Although we are entering in monies that are not true philanthropic dollars, we can still generate reports for those dollars by using the appeal codes.  For internal control purposes, you never want to do journal entries when you have a system capable of doing this for you.  For one, journal entries lends itself to more errors and less backup than an actual entry to your system.  Normally, journal entries are used to correct an entry or to record an entry that you cannot do by system entry.  So for, our auditors are please with the internal control processes we have in place because total deposits matches up with total receipts."

So if any other orgs that are fully integrated..if you have money that you deal with that isnt considered philanthropic, how do you handle such monies?  do you enter it directly into FE? and if so, what are your procedures?
