    User Group Discussion: Lost Alumni

This continues to be a challenging issue, many institutions hold old records on paper cards, microfiche and in some instances have missing records for certain graduation years. Good discussions and suggestions around the groups which include online “lost alumni” directory, trade magazine advertisement, newsletter articles, surveying contactable alumni, external services to scan information for importing and using temps to manually enter the data. One attendee asked the group for some feedback on how other institutes measure success as there are concerns over costs and whether the alumni have the inclination to respond.
    • Loughborough University have created a “lost alumni” directory
    • University of the Arts London have found very low response from trade magazine adverts
    • University of Bristol have found surveying alumni has been successful
    • Many Universities have used the Blackbaud Mailwise service to find new addresses
    • University of Salford are trialling Tracesmart to find lost alumni and addresses

Re: User Group Discussion: Lost Alumni

We had a large (35K) number of alumni we'd never been in contact with as the University had previously run a "guild of past students" which had been subscription only... I ran a campaign to try and contact as many of these as possible and managed to get back about 3,200 (Still lots to find though!)...one significant aspect was that we offered entry into a prize draw for everyone who updated their details... which proved a huge success... the winner got a £400 digital camera, we got 3,200 updates!
