My recent request to our server support team and director to backup the SQL Server transaction logs every two hours was returned with information that the SQL server logs are written to a san/lun and could be recovered if the database was ever lost or interrupted during the business day. I am the technical support specialist supporting RE and FE. Our director asked for a flow chart of RE and FE databases and well as the SQL server database files and logs to determine if the databases and logs are together or separate drives. SQL Server 2000 is installed to the C drive on the server. RE and FE with their dbs and logs are installed to the F drive which is a lun. Does anyone have Visio or similar diagram of these dbs and logs? Also the question was asked about committing the database entries/updates. When does the commit of data entered occur in SQL? I know from the BB solutions that Blackbaud only supports SQL Server backups using the BMC so I don't belive we can separate the dbs and logs to separate drives unless we can add a third drive which is not available at the present. Does anyone separate these dbs and log files?
Other questions asked by our server support team: "How heavy is the load on this system? How many transactions are posted each day? Do you have an estimate? The system can be programmed to back the logs up as often as we want, but the question is whether this is practical or even desirable."
From RE and FE Admin, Statistics, numbers of transactions are displayed for many types but the daily transactions vary greatly. Does anyone have a SQL query or program to determine the number of RE and FE transactions that occur daily?
Correction to my post. SQL Server 2000 is installed on the F drive (lun) on the server.
