I am just curious about what other school policies are about taking a course twice. Do you allow it? How is the grading handled? At present we allow students to retake a course but they get a grade of AUDIT. We are now presented with a student who wants to take Spanish I over again, although he passed it the first time, but did not learn it. He wants to take it again and get a grade for taking it a second time, instead of the AUD grade. Not sure how colleges would look at this. Let me know how you guys handle this. Thanks! We don't like to do this, but we have, especially in the cases where the students do not learn anything. We also have the students Audit, for the most part, but there are times when we do allow for a grade. All grades show, or AUD for the students who are only allowed to audit. So far we have not had any questions from colleges here in my office. [Email Removed]

We had a student last year in the same situation. Did not do well in Spanish I (D-), wanted to retake it for a grade. We did not allow this. He took the class again as an audit. Both will show on an transcript because that was his history here. We also suggested taking the course in the summer, (would not show then on transcript)or be tutored in the fall and take our Spanish II in the spring, which he is doing this year.

We currently allow students to take a course twice, though it doesn't happen too often. The process here is that the original course and grade are removed from the students history. The only thing that appears is the new grade during the year that they took the course the second time. I've got problems with this approach, since it obviosly doesn't show the whole picture. But, thus far I haven't been able to change this policy. I work at a Catholic Private School that is very forgiving. I certainly like the two approaches that have been discussed so far, using the Audit, or showing both grades. When both grades are used, do they both get calculated in the GPA? Actually, there is a rule that defines how the program will handle GPA calculations when a course is taken twice. In Configuration, Business Rules, Grades in the 3rd section the rule, "When calculating GPAs including courses taken multiple times, use..." all the classes (default) the class with the highest grade the most recently taken class So you are able to indicate how you would like the system to handl
