    Laser Printers for checks

We are currently looking at getting a laser printer to print checks. Can anyone give any recomendations on the type of printer and or special toner that is required. We do normaly purchase HP Printers.

We have 2 HP Laserjet 4100N's, one of which we bought brand new from HP approx. 5 years ago for $2,700 and one we bought last year from Ebay for about $400 (new). Both machines have done very well for us and have never given us a bit of trouble. You will need MICR toner cartridge and again, we bought a cartridge from Ebay last year for approx. $40.00. You only need to use the MICR toner when actually printing the checks and can use a regular toner the rest of the time. We cut approx 75-100 checks a week and have yet to replace our MICR toner.

We use an HP LaserJet 2430tn to print checks and it has worked fine.

    Laser Printers for checks

We're using an HP LaserJet 1022n. It's considered a "personal" laser printer. Rather than dealing with swapping MICR toner cartridges in and out, we just dedicated it to checks. It's fairly small and takes up much less room than the dot-matrix printer and check signer we were using before. Troy Group has a special arrangement with HP to remanufacture HP printers specifically for check printing. They add a number of features to the HP printers. At the time, I didn't think they were worth the extra expense. After all, I don't need MICR fonts because those come with the Accounting Forms module in FE. And I don't need a printer tray lock to lock up our check stock because we're using blank check stock with the Accounting Forms module. (We have four different corporations with eight checking accounts among them. Blank check stock is great!) A few weeks ago, though, I found one good reason to consider the Troy printers. We printed dozens of checks and, when they were done, discovered that the toner had started to run out about one-third of the way through. The resulting checks were unusable. Troy's modified HP printers, however, stop printing if there isn't enough toner to meet bank standards. Whether that feature is worth a few hundred dollars will depend on how many times we get affected by this problem. Paul Higgins Green Lake Conference Center Green Lake, Wisconsin
