    SQL Software Price

Can anyone pass on the price quote they got for purchasing SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition All Languages. I got $245.58.

If you're a nonprofit & you register with techsoup (www.techsoup.org) you can pay a $150 admin fee to acquire SQL Server Standard Edition (Includes Software Assurance and 1 Processor License). I'd paste the link to the actual web page, but it's too long to possibly to work. Go to the techsoup web site, from there click on the link to “DiscounTech” from the many links on the very bottom of the page, click on “Microsoft” on the list of vendors to the left, then under categories, click on “Database.” That should bring up a page listing Microsoft products including SQL Server. We haven't actually ordered SQL server, because we don't need it yet, but I ran across this info when researching the costs.

As for long links, you can shorten them at www.TinyURL.com.

We got one license for SQL server from TechSoup for $150. However, there are limits to the quantities you can get donated and the limit for SQL Server is one. Since we have a dual processor server, we had to purchase the other license which was over $3,000 on Microsoft's Open Charity License. Mitch Gibbs Director, IS Advocate Charitable Foundation

Microsoft has, at last count, two pricing models for SQL server. Either you pay by the seat or you pay by the processor. I've looked at a couple of dozen situations and paying by the processor has always made more sense, but your milage may vary. I think going by seat can put you ahead if you have several servers each person is connecting to. It's always a good idea to look at your unique situation. If you work with a reseller, they are often helpful in working through the murky world of software licensing ;-) We've worked with some folks at CDW who were very helpful in getting us into Microsoft's Charity program. Let me know if you'd like to speak to them. Good luck! Mitch Gibbs Director, IS Advocate Charitable Foundation
