    FAWEB 7

Using FAWEB 7 in a mixed platform environment. Firefox is the supported browser on the Apple platform and am currently having problems with a different grading scale not being reflected within FAWEB, an incident of FAWEB freezing when entering comments, attendance taken but not showing up in EE, and program kicking out a user. One teacher was switching to a different class and the login screen appears. Is anyone else seeing this happen in either environment. Thanks. We just finished our first round of grades and comments using FAWEB 7, and we also had a few incidents of teachers receiving the login screen while changing classes. We also noticed some issues when cutting and pasting comments from Word. For example, if a teacher used 3rd, 8th, 22nd, etc. in their comment and Word automatically changed it to superscript, when it printed all text following these entries was in a amaller font. In addition some spacing was off between paragraphs and if extra carriage returns were at the end of a comment they showed up as a lot of white space on the report card. Any others????? I received email last night from faculty with issues on comments not being saved, being timed out - but the warning was never displayed before timing out and the teacher swears he was interacting with FAWEB and how could he be timed out ??? Being kicked out of FAWEB has happened for him as well. We use Crystal Reports for the report and the returns may not be a formatting problem for us, but teacher grades are not due until Thursday. I will ask for FAWEB to be a separate Forum and will email others using as I value the experiences of other schools. Is this problem only happening to the Apple systems? Over a WAN? From home with a variety of connections? or? Thanks. Marilyn

It might be easier to use IE as your browser using the Apple platform. We are using FAWEB 6 and had a few problems but when the instrucors used IE it worked better.

I just looked at the newsletter Academically Speaking (one of Blackbaud's newsletters) for the first time and the Tip of the issue was for teachers to choose to display a timeout warning message in the Preferences for their FAWEB gradebook because if they don't save every 20 minutes, they will be timed out. We have had problems with single and double spacing when pasting from Microsoft Word as well. The Shift+Enter option that BB recommends is not working for the faculty...We use IE as our browser on a Windows 2003 network.

FAWEB7 will time out irregardless of interaction if you do not SAVE periodically. The message will display, but it may display BEHIND the grades screen depending on your display. My suggestion is to SAVE every 15 minutes as a procedure. Also, you can change the default time out period. I have it set at 45 minutes, but ask teachers to SAVE every 15 minutes in the cheat sheet I give them.

On the Word problem, Word inserts formatting characters when you are building a document. Shift+Enter is supposed to bring over that formatting when you copy/paste. My suggestion is to copy/paste only from Notepad.

We're still using 6 and have had so many problems I can't begin to count them. However, in 6 you can control how long the timeout period is - ours is set to 120 minutes. We still recommend to teachers that they save often - and they still lose comments. Most write them in Word and then paste into FAWeb - it's is a fussy method but better than having to rew-rite comments. I hope the ability to control the timeout period wasn't removed in 7. We are using FAWEB7 and have also had problems with the system cutting out as a teacher switches classes or tries to save comments. This often happens in the morning as we are inputting homeroom attendance, and clearly the teacher has not been on for 20 minutes since school has not been in session that long! I have adjusted the actual timeout period on the web server itself to be longer (not the Education Edge setting for teacher time out) and this has helped as well. As far as the timeout warning not showing up for teachers even if they have it set to show in preferences, check your pop up blocker. We have found that a number of pop up blockers will block the message window from showing. Also, if you have word open too, sometimes the message window pops up underneath it, so the teacher does not see it. Blackbaud needs to change the program code to have the window pop up all the way to the top, no matter how many screens/programs are open.
