Importing New Constituents and Updating Records

I know this is a long winded question but it’s complex! I would deeply appreciate any suggestions. I work at a theater and have a messy database of ticket buyers in a system called Star. I want to import names and addresses from Star into RE semi annually for direct mail solicitations so that I can keep track of who I am writing to. The ticket buyers data that I want to import contains many duplicates (repetitions within Star and overlap with RE). Right now RE has only donors and prospective donors (about 7,000 records). When I import the new constituents (names and addresses) into RE, I need to mark the records (add an attribute) of those already in RE with out overwriting the names and addresses. The names and addresses in Star contain mistakes. Our RE data is fairly clean. RE and Star do not share any primary key. (And even if Star had an import function – for importing RE’s constituent codes, I wouldn’t be able to export the primary key!) Here’s my questionable solution: Create an import file of all of my RE names and addresses. Import the messy ticket buyers names and addresses with an attribute to mark them. Tell RE to use duplicate criteria and update existing records (thus adding the attribute to people in RE who are also in Star). Then import my original RE data updating existing records so that the names and addresses are put back in their cleaner state. Do you see any problems with this? Have a better idea? Thank you!! Pele
