We are talking about the possibility of instituting a minimum gift level/subscription for our alums to receive our Alumni Magazine. Do any other schools do this? My undergrad college sends out the alum magazine to every alumni they have record of. This publication comes out quarterly. We currently send out to all alums, but I think it might be worthwhile to include that as a survey question the next time we do one. Something along the lines of their receptiveness to a minimum gift in order to receive the magazine. The problem you'll run into is you'll get the interested alums more committed, but the ones who aren't interested, or are waffling will fall away. That's at least one point of contact you have with them that they wouldn't receive if you charged. Another issue I've heard discussed on this topic is the problem with alumni feeling like if they pay the annual "subscription" for the magazine, then they've donated to the university. We don't charge for our magazine. As printing and postage costs have risen, we've cut back on the number of issues from 4 to 2 per year. Our alumni can post class notes online and our website is updated often with current news. Hopefully this makes up for the elimination of 2 issues.
