    Bilingual salutations on mailouts

We have a bilingual mailout: one side of our letter is English and one side is French.  Would someone be able to tell me how (and where) you would post salutations in 2 different languages in Raisers Edge so that we could print both – one on one side of the letter and one on the other side of the letter.

                            (ie        Mr. and Mrs. Smith

                                        M. et Mme. Smith)

    Greatly appreciate any assistance

    Thank You

    Salut Mary,

I didn't see anyone else reply so thought that I would pipe in with what I have seen other multi-lingual organizations do.  First, this solution would depend on the data being entered in a specific manner in your database.

Using your example of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, if the titles are entered as Title 1 = Mr. and Title 2 = M. (with spouse Title 1 Mrs. and spouse Title 2 Mme.), you can use the following solution.

I have had a client who set up the Primary Addressee: Mr. and Mrs. John Smith

Primary Salutation: Mr. and Mrs. Smith

French Addressee: M. et Mme. John Smith

(this value is achieved by building an Addressee Formula in Configuration that pulls Title 2 et Spouse Title 2 First Name Last Name)

French Salutation: M. et Mme. Smith

By having these on the constituent's addressee/salutation tab, you can easily export the appropriate values for any situation.

I hope that you find this helpful,

    Naomi

    Re: Bilingual salutations on mailouts

In Québec, where many organisations mail in both languages, we tend to record donors' language preferences (with an attribute: French/English) so each records are set up with a single primary addressee / salutation matching the choice of language.  We ask the question on each piece of correspondance we send.  If you do not have such coding available, I believe having an additionnal addressee and salutation as described above is the best way to go.
