Is there a way to tell the query to use the abreviation of the state in the output rather than the full name of the state?

The output of a query is not supposed to be used for reporting so it is less customizeable than using export. If you are trying to get an exportable spreadsheet from your query just put in your criteria and save the query. The go to export and select your address fields. You can select the format you want there (abbreviation or full name).
Unfortunately the only time you can not use export is if your query is being used in a pivot report so if that is the case you are unfortunately stuck with the long description in query.
Instead of using seperate columns for city and state if you use the combined city and state the state will be abbreviated. That's the only way I know of getting the short form
As an added note - If you export the City, State into Excel you can use Text to columns under the Data heading and choose a comma as your delimeter to separate the fields.
Tools, User Options, Query tab, click on code tables in the left part of window, choose short description. But be warned it will choose the short description for all code tables like constituency codes, etc.
