    Pointing workstations towards new server

We are in the process of switching for a new server (almost done) and I get mixed messages on how I should point the workstations towards it - should I simply retrieve the new deploy package as for any update or new installation (that would be the quick and dirty way), or should I take the time to uninstall each workstation before I click on the deploy package?  Manually changing the ODBC is not an option, it never worked in the past.  Thanks.

    Hello there,

We recently ran through this problem. you have to direct the workstation by going to the registry. Open Run and type regedit and then go to HKey Local Machine folder and then Software and then Blackbuad and Raiser Edge and RE 7.0. On the right hand side you will see Install Source and thats where you have to update the server name- Manualy

The Blackbaud Management Console has a utility to manage the deploy package.  I would recommend using that rather than manually editting the registry.

The reason that simply changing the ODBC doesn't work is that the first thing that RE does is look for the deploy directory (based on the registry setting) and compare the deploy settings there with the deploy settings on your workstation.  If they are different, it will update the settings on the workstation.  Changing the ODBC settings on the workstation will cause the deploy settings to be different, and cause the ODBC settings to be reset to what is in the old deploy directory.

Doing a simple install/repair from the new deploy directory might work, but you might have to uninstall/reinstall.  Using the utility will definitely work without having to uninstall first.

Hmm.... in addition to the current one, the way the reset works could explain a few other issues we had in the past - thanks !

If you've moved your database to a new server, I recommend manually updating/repairing the workstations to point to the new server.  This is safer if you are not familiar with making changes in the registry.
