updating appeal codes on old gifts

Last year my team and I decided that we would come up with appeal codes that will actually be useful and mean something to people in development (meaning us) and in years to come. The process has been as such: last year we came up with temporary codes in order to see what made sense, and what we would change with the goal of having more permanent coding system for 2009. Moving ahead as planned I have come up with a new appeal coding system which is only slightly different from the 2008 system but the changes are pretty key. Now I am left with the task of changing all the gifts from 2008 to the new coding system so that we can have  true "apples to apples" reporting moving forward.

My question is, how can I do this besides manually changing all the gifts? The challenge I face right away is that I can't simply take all the gifts with an appeal code of "xyz2008" and have them translate to the same code for 2009 - in most cases I am taking what was once a broad coding category and breaking it into smaller, more specific categories. Even if I am able to take a portion of the 2008 gifts in a query in order to change them, is it even possible to globally change an appeal code on an existing gift? Are there any other options?

Any suggestions will be a great help! thank you!

Provided that the gifts are not posted you can possibly do this.  If you can create a gift query which gives you the exact gifts you want to make the same change to, you can use global change - gift to change the appeal on those gifts.  Then another query for the next group, etc.

Yes, of course, a gift query! Thank you - that was where I was getting stuck.

How do I unpost over 900 gifts so I can change their appeals?

    Thanks,

    Donna

    Hey Donna,

You can globally unpost gifts by running the Unpost Gifts plug-in.  Check out Knowledgebase solution BB87050 to download the plug-in and get the steps to run it. Remember to make a valid backup of your database before you proceed.

    Hope this helps!
