Elizabeth - We use the Donor Acknowledgement Letter function in RE Mail to run receipts by gift batch number. I'm attaching our final version.

And we do the opposite, we use the Receipt function in RE Mail to run a custom receipt acknowledging / thanking for gift in one process.

We use a combined letter and receipt, I've attached a copy.
We enter our gifts via Batch entry and process all acknowledgments out of RE mail. Our master acknowledgment, county appeal, annual appeal, and hon/mem letter all function the same way. We have special text imbedded as a contitional mail merge for many of our special funds.
