Our organizaion has a policy that the gift is entered on the Record of the individual who signed the check for the full amount of the gift. Soft credit is issued to the Spouse or other individuals as instructed by the donor. Hope this helps.

Janet,
When adding a gift to a constituent who indicates on their pledge card the gift is also from spouse, eg, Mr. and Mrs. James Smith, or Jim and Janet Smith; how do you mark their record to show they want to be recognized on the donor board as a couple? More specifically then, what type of report would you run to show this? Do you always make the spouse a separate constituent in that case, and split the gift? Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure I must be missing a simple answer.
Thanks,

We usually have the male record as the primary record and the gift entered on the primary record and the female is on the spouse record, and we not split gifts. We recognize both Mr. and Mrs. Now, if they are not married, as you mentioned, they are related to each other. I would make the person who signed the check as the primary record and hard credit the gift and then soft credit the other person. I would put the record in the Relationship tab.
Hope this is clear.

We also use the hard/soft credit approach, as opposed to split gift. Check signee (person or organization) gets the hard credit, and other entity gets the soft credit. I would make an exception and split the gift, but only if there was an explicit request from the donors. We do try to accommodate our donors . I would make a gift note on each record to explain the situation, or attach something in the media tab, to serve as backup.
