We currently have two semesters and (for some reason) we also schedule twice a year. The students get their fall schedules sent home over the summer and their spring schedules over the Christmas break. The second semester master schedule is done from scratch, even though most of our courses are two semesters in length. We are hoping to move to Full Year scheduling for the next school year. I know that scheduling once is the norm, but has anyone else gone through this transition? I was just looking for some advice, since I know it will be difficult for our first time through. One of our challenges will be to do a better job placing our freshmen students. For example, there are two science classes that ninth graders can take (Biology or Honors Biology). This year we had two sections of the regular in the fall. About 20 kids dropped from the honors into the regular course during the first marking period, which left us with two very large sections. So, we created 3 regular bio classes for the spring. I know that the master schedule can be edited, but I would imagine that this would be more difficult when everything else is already scheduled. Any recommendations for these types of pitfalls that we may encounter would be greatly appreciated.Tara Tatasciore

Example- I am trying to create a rule to have a study hall before or after a specific course with the same students, same teacher.
The problem is that everytime I enroll a student in any study hall, the system prompts me to enroll the student in the course that I have created the rule for and will not let me override the rule.
Also, if I try to schedule two courses at the same time in different semesters, same teacher, the system wants me to enroll the students in both courses and will not let me override.
Can anyone please tell me what I am doing wrong?
Thanks in advance.

We have never tried the Blackbaud's automated scheduler and would like to do so. Has anyone else got some tips that we could use, that would be great.

Could you give me the steps to start with (how to apply course rules etc)?

Some rules for our Scheduling:

Each period is 40 minutes; a double period will therefore last 80 minutes.

If a course meet 3 times a week, then they should meet across four days (eg. Mon, Tues and Thurs; or Thurs, Fri and Tues etc)

If a course meets 2 times a week, then they should meet across three days (eg. Mon and Wed etc)

If HL and SL has same teacher/set then schedule the courses together.

Schedule the Maths courses first: Mutually exclusive

Gd 12 block 1 cannot meet with block 5
Teachers within a block should meet at the same time.

Thanks

So, each academic class will have one drop day. Our science classes will still have one double period and also one drop day. Does anyone currently follow this type of schedule? I'd love to talk with anyone who has experience with this.Tara Tatasciore

A consultant came in to help us with the transition. I didn't become registrar until the fall of 05, so I missed the assigning of patterns for classes. We are on a 6 day 7 period rotating schedule. So, there are 8 patterns for academic classes and they all have one drop day. Because of science classes with one double period, we have some problems with class balancing and room assignments (English classes need to be scheduled in the Science building etc). We were thinking of changing the patterns, but I feel inexperienced for this task. Any suggestions like books to read, classes to take, or support people to contact?Tara Tatasciore

Is seems to me that the entire first marking period is a drop add period for students. Though we have a week of drop add at the beginning of the semester, students are able to drop an elective up through the halfway point of the first marking period when progress reports are sent home, without getting a W. And students are also able to change the level of a course (from honors to regular or vice versa) at any time during the first marking period without getting a W. This is disruptive for teachers who's class lists are constantly changing. I was just wondering how other schools handle schedule changes.

Trimester scheduling

Our school is considering switching from semesters to trimesters, from 8 periods/day to 5 periods/day. Grades and comments were added through import from Faculty Access. This occurs most notably when I am trying to rearrange whole classes - the 6th grade is rearranged each trimester and that's when the drops occur. When I transfer I always get the dialog box that says All grades and comments will be transferred. OK. If grades and comments are transferred the next dialogue box says The grades and comments have been transferred. If the transfer of the student occurs [b]without the transfer of grades and comments, the second dialogue box does not appear but then it is too late
Has anyone else run into this? Does anyone else know how to solve this. BB suggested upgrading - they can't seem to resolve this issue

Moving to Block Scheduling in the Middle School

We are a junior high changing to a middle school and are adding a modified block schedule for SY 2004-5.
