New Timetable after Academic Year Created

After creating the new 09-10 academic year and entering all student course requests, we have decided to change our schedule. Initially, I created a new timetable & patterns until I realized that I cannot change the timetable that already exists in the session unless I delete all of the scheduling information - including the course requests. The only other option I can see is to edit the timetable that was in use last year.

Are there any problems that will come up down the road if I edit last year's timetable? Are there other options that I'm not aware of.
