Semi-monthly Payroll for Exempt Employees

We are considering moving our exempt employees to a semi-monthly payroll, rather than monthly. The change would be effective with the first pay date in January 2010. I have been running one employee on the semi-monthly pay schedule since July 1. I am really concerned about getting the tax withholding to calculate correctly. I have had some problems with that so far.

1. Has anyone has experience with using a semi-monthly payroll cycle for salaried, contract employees?
2. Has anyone had experience with converting from monthly to a semi-monthly payroll cycle?

Monthly Payroll for non exempt employees

We are exploring the possibility of going to a monthly payroll verses the bi-weekly we utilize now.

Can anyone please share an explanation of what pay periods and pay dates work best for non exempt employees when paying monthly? Any serious concerns or advise you have that I could consider in this decision?

Does anyone have a solution to Payroll 7 posting in detail -

We just recently converted to Payroll 7 and I am getting ready to post Payroll for the first time. We have over 250 employees and I do not care to see each paycheck post in detail nor do I want all the users of general ledger to see that detail. How can I work around that? I thought we could use control accounts to limit the posting but that does not seem to work. Any suggestions. I liked Payroll 6 cause we could make it post in summary but that option is no longer available in Payroll 7.

Non-Cash Compensation for Dependent Medical Insurance

We have an employee who is adding a 25-year-old dependent to our group medical insurance. It is my understanding that the FMV of this benefit is taxable to the employee.

I'm trying to set up a non-cash compensation in Blackbaud to report this benefit, and I'm stuck on what to debit and credit on the GL Distribution tab. I'm also not sure if the amount of the non-cash contribution should be entered in Box 14 on the W-2.

Has anyone else had to do this?

Time and Attendance

Is anyone using a third party time and attendance program to record hours worked and leave taken and then importing into the payroll module?

Setting up a reimbursement

We reimburse some of our employees for mileage. We currently have this set up as a non-taxable pay type (piece rate), where we input the miles and then let the system calculate the reimbursement. However, we recently found out that the system is applying FICA and other benefits based on this reimbursement, when it shouldn't be.

How do you have your reimbursements set up? We would like to still process the reimbursement through payroll, instead of using accounts payable for the reimbursements.

Other issues with Payroll.

We just had a new issue raise it's ugly head with payroll. We have an employee that gets salary from 2 departments and volunteer mileage from another. The software as of April is now splitting her fica, worker's comp, unemployment comp between the salary departments and the mileage department even though the mileage is set up as a non-taxable pay type. The same is happening with my stipend people that have salary in another department. The stipend is non-taxable, but it is splitting the benefits into that program also. The answer from support is the software is doing exactly what it is suppose to do! Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! I have 72 stipend people and 300 volunteers. Their suggestion is to look at each of those each payperiod and journal entry them. What do I need this software for if I have to verify every check to correct their programming issues. I feel like a BETA sight with this and with their A/R software modules.

Linking Blackbaud attendance record with Employee Web Site - HR Connection

Our medical insurance carrier has provided us with a web site, HR Connection, to provide our employees with information on all of their benefits and other communication such as insurance forms, posting up company events, etc. The HR Connection manual states that we can link with our payroll system and make the attendance record available to the employees. I have called Blackbaud support and they suggest that I post this asking if anyone had any experience using HR Connection or linking their employee attendance records to a website and making it available to employees. Any information that you could provide me with would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and have a great day.

Paperless Direct Deposit

We would like to discontinue printing direct deposit advices. It would save a lot of our time we spend folding, stuffing, and distributing Direct Deposit advices that most people don't care to have. We would like to print them to a file and it would get routed to the employees via e-mail. We will still have to print a few that refuse to use Direct Deposit but that will be okay.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions for going paperless with regards to the Direct Deposit advices?

2008 W2's

We just recently converted to FE Payroll version 7 and are currentlyon verson 7.77.245.0003. My question is to those of you who have had version 7 since last year and had to print W2's. Have you found one type of W2 form to be better than another? From what I have read on the Knowledge Base the 2 up form should work without any problems.

Also, is the end of the year update for 2008 available yet?

Payroll as a Human Resource Database

Although we will continue to pay our employees using ADP, Blackbaud Payroll gave us the advantage of many fields which could be used to manage people, benefits, family members, etc. So we started down that path.

Is anyone else out there trying to use Payroll as only a Human Resource tool????

How are you handling the calendar versus fiscal year issue. At least 53 of us would like to have an FY choice.

I think we worked out how to indicate annual salaries, keep track of family members, and allocate benefots. Creating banks, accounts and other items that won't be used to pay or post is another problem that remains.

Hi, We currently use Paychex and their HRO system to track payroll and HR functions but are considering BB's Payroll 7 as a way to reduce the number of places we have to update information. Has anyone had a positive experience with Payroll 7?
