Donors that give as a couple

    Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all well.

I was wondering how you manage donors that give as a couple. We have different donors levels as constituency codes which refers to the amount they have given accumulatively, i.e. Donor 1, 2 etc I am wary about applying donor 1 to both constituents in a couple as it does impact on our donor numbers, prompt lists for events etc. I was thinking about a reciprocal donor constituency code and I wanted to know what you thought about this or if any of you have had a similar situation?

    Many thanks

If the couple is married (with a few rare exceptions) we only have one RE record and therefore the gift is applied for the couple. If the couple is not married we tyically hard credit one consitutent and soft credit the other.  In terms of designations you could list them together such as Mr. John Smith & Ms. Joan Brown.

     Hope that helps.

Thanks Tara, however, the problem is that we have a number of couples where both are constituents.  For example, they may give as a couple, but the other spouse might be a board member for a trust that we are cultivating, therefore they would be invited to events and therefore have their own constituent record.

We do use the soft credit function, but my problem is with the constituency coding.  Should they both have the donor constituency code, or should it be applied to one constituent record?

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

    Thanks

    Charlotte

Re: Donors that give as a couple

    Hi there,

I was wondering would you consider using Attributes to track your giving categories instead of constituency codes?  But I guess that would be a challenge because I gather you already dedicated time and great efforts to set up your current system.

So, I’ll just share what we do.  At our organization, we handle couples who want to give separately, by giving them a constituency code of Individual.  And if it's a board member, we have the constituency code of Board Member.  The records are then linked together.  For tracking the giving level, we would use Attributes tab, creating a field called "giving category" and giving it a name (Harbor Benefactor), also defining the giving range.   To retrieve these categories and names, we would pull them through a query.

If you intend to recognize all the gifts put together as a couple, rather than separate, I would say put the giving category coding on one record. To back this up, use the soft crediting option to make that connection for you. It pretty much shows that they are one even though they give separately.  Hope this helps a little. Huh?Wink
