    Conditional Merge Hanging

    We have suddenly developed a problem (literally it was work one, not working the next) when performing a condional merge from Export. The query is fine, the criteria in the export is fine but when we click "merge now" it hangs for hours. When we click on the screen we get the pop-up "This action cannot be completed because the other application is busy. Choose 'Swith To" to activate the busy application and correct the problem."

    We click on "Switch To" and nothing happens.

    We have to Control-Atl-Delete to get out of the program.

    When we try to open documents from previous merges we get a pop-up  that says

    "Opening this document will run the following SQL command SELECT *FROM 'EXPORTDATA' Data from your database will be placed in the document. Do you want to continue?

    There is a Show Help button and when we click it we get the following message

    "This message can appear if your document contains code for accessing information from a database - for example, if your document is a form letter that retrieves an address from a mailing list.

    If this is expected behavior and you want to retrieve the data, click Yes.

    If you don't think this document should be accessing information from a database, click No. If a network administrator or IT professional is available, let them know about the SQL command that this document is attempting to run."

    Is any one else running into this problem?

    Carl,

    Did you check to see if the spreadsheet you're trying to export to is open?  I get the same message (or a very similar one) if the spreadsheet already exists and I'm attempting to replace it with a new export and the Excel document is open.

    Sorry, I can't help with the SQL error message.

    I know this sound stupid, but have you turned your computer completely off and cleared the RAM.  Whenever I have had Exports/queries hang, that seems to work.  A Microsoft employee told me not just Restart, but leave off for a few minutes (5 is good) and then reoppen the application you are having trouble with, and try again.Something about Windows eating too much of the RAM.

    Along those lines, you might also want to see if the merge works on another computer. On the original computer, you may be able to press Alt and Tab until Microsoft Word is selected and continue with the merge (per Knowledgebase solution BB389324).

     Yes, I've been having the same problem as well since we upgraded to a newer version of Office. What I think is happening is that newer versions of Office require you to accept the SQL command in order to protect users from possible malicious code. However, in RE, if you open a different program while it's merging, the Word window asking to accept or deny the SQL commands needed for the merge end up behind the RE windows, and you can't move or minimize the RE windows because its waiting on Microsoft Word. I basically have to leave RE open and on top and not do anything else on my computer until the SQL message from Word pops up, or it hangs indefinitely and I have to shut RE down in task manager, only to find the Word prompt still waiting. I haven't found a solution for this yet, but its incredibly inconvenient.

    I use Alt/Tab to find the open Word Window with the question box. That way you can do other work or check email while your mail is merging.

    Usually it seems like there will be 2 Word windows open, so check both.

     Thank you so much for that tip!!! I have been banging my head against the wall trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. Never thought to do that to find the open dialogue box....I'm used to those things showing "up front".

    Thanks again!

    Hopefully it will help anyone else out there experiencing this issue.

     My IT Guru did the following and it fixed the problem for us using Word 2007:

    Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";}

    Word 2007

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options

    "SQLSecurityCheck"=dword:00000000

    1. Start Registry Editor.
    2. Locate and then click the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options

    1. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
    2. Under Name, type:

    SQLSecurityCheck

    1. Double-click SQLSecurityCheck.
    2. In the Value data box, type:

    00000000

    1. Click OK.
