Tracking Years of Service for Volunteers

I work for a child welfare organization and we are fairly new to the volunteer module in RE.  I have been asked to setup some queries\reports on years of service for our volunteers.  We award volunteers not based on hours put in, but years of service at 2yrs, 5, 10, 15, 20 etc.  You could potentially only work one hour in a year and we would still count this as a year of service.  We are struggling with how to go about getting this information into RE and how to get it out.  Currently on the Bio 2 tab of the constituent record we have a constituency code of Volunteer and we add the start date here, but there can be starts and stops on from and to dates.  RE looks like it uses time sheets to go towards awards and this is based on hours and not years.  Any suggestions on this would be appreciated. Mary-Ellen ScullySystems AnalystThe Children's Aid Society of London and Middlesex

I'm afraid I dump the volunteer type data (from the Volunteer module, General tab) into Access and use it to manipulate and calculate. The way I deal with starts and stops is to have an understanding that the current assignments must have been continuous (more or less, though I don't quibble over a few months). Any service from many years back goes into a special Volunteer Type called "Previous Service" with start and end dates. I can then add these previous years into the current years to get total years of service. I don't think this is the most elegant solution, but it works for us. If anyone has better info please share. We have the same problem with the dates.  We handle a lot of this manually, but we do not start/end on the Bio 2 tab, so we can actually use the start date (in Bio 2) and then look at the Volunteer Tab under genera for any adjustments.  The General tab is where we enter start/end dates for volunteers that may go on hold or leave for a while.

     Hope that helps a little.
