BB online training on how to write a policies & procedure manual - worth it?

I'm taking on the job of creating a policies and procedures manual for Raisers Edge. It's a pretty daunting task and I'm considering taking the online classes offered by Blackbaud -- they cover Constituents, Configuration & Administration, Gift Records, and Reports & Queries.

It's a little pricey to take the class, so before enrolling I want to get feedback on those who have taken it before. Is it worth the price? Was it helpful? If not, where did you go for other resouces?

Any feedback that you have would be great.

     Thanks!!

As a beginner myself in RE, I've taken several of the online courses.  Our school had an annual training package, so there was no class by class cost for my training.  You might consider this approach and take everything they offer.  All of the classes have a Powerpoint presentation file made available and it would be useful in developing a procedures manual.  However, perhaps you should be asking about folks out there that have existing procedure manuals that they would be willing to share.  I came across two useful procedures uploaded by one generous individual.  Smile    If there are others reading this response, please upload more of these procedures to help other educational and non profits from spending a lot of time making procedures when they may already exist.  I will keep looking for these kind individuals.  Also, if you are having trouble uploading, my e-mail address is dterrell@loy.org

The class I took (not sure if it was BB or AFP) was extremely helpful. However it was mostly about DEVELOPMENT policies & procedures instead of Raiser's Edge Policies. They had a ton of samples and ideas. However the only thing they mentioned about RE was that you should also have Data Entry Procedures. Regardless of why you attend I'm sure you'll find it helpful.

    Hi Liana,

I took the P&P: Fundraising Structure and Gifts class last week.  I am in the same boat you are in.  The class wasn't what I expected at all.  Although I think it was interesting and a learning experience, it didn't meet my needs.

I would be happy to fax you the course outline and you can take a look and decide for yourself.

Email me directly at joelle.brown@mckennan.org with your fax number.

    Thanks,
    Joelle

    Hello Everyone,

If you haven't already done it, I would highly recommend checking out the Blackbaud User Society website (www.blackbus.org).  I am in the process of doing this very same thing for our RE procedures and standards, and some kind souls have uploaded different examples of procedures they use that have been helpful.  You'll find these documents on the forum page under the link "Shared Files".

Also, I would check out www.fundsvcs.org site for some more good downloads.  Most of the documents on this site are more general development subject areas, but there are a few that relate specifically to database and fundraising technology standards and policies.

Anyone know of some other good ones?  I'm trying to find more information on some more specific best practices within RE (such as prospect management, pipeline reports, and solicitor portfolios) - if you know of any I would greatly appreciate it!

On Blackbus.org we are starting a project to create a searchable database of policies, procedures, training manuals - you name it - that members are submitting to the Shared Files section now. The text will be viewable as well as having downloadable files attached to the entry.

Look for that in late July or early August. IF you;d like to help with the development of the project look here: http://www.blackbus.org/forum/documentation-library
