Conflict between RE and Raid 5 ?

We are about to buy a new server and migrate to 7.83.  However, an RE admin friend of mine tells me that there is a huge conflict between RE and Raid 5 and I should install Raid 3 instead.  Like, don't even *think* about Raid 5.

I can't help but be a bit skeptical about his statement. I would have expected the forums to go in uproar if that was the case - I believe Raid 5 is the most common Raid on servers? Our current server has one, but I still run 7.5 on it, not 7.71 and higher.

Thanks for your help, as my knowledge of server is limited.

Buy a beefy server and you are good to go. We run a quad 3.0 XEON w/16GB of RAM. We run RAID10 on the OS and SQL, but run a RAID5 array for the database and have no performance problems.

RE is a resource hog, so don't underbuy your hardware.

Thanks Steve - this is exactly what I told IS, despite the fact that our database is small compared to others.  After that these considerations, they left us little choice but to move to a VMWare environment on their server.  We should start testing soon and I hope performance will match what we are used to.
