Does anyone have any procedures they can share about how to deal with business contacts who are invited to events? I really don't want to resort to creating all these individual records for people who are never going to be solicted.

I would suggest that you simply track them as Registrants in the Events Module (assuming that you have that module). Then, later, you can convert them to constituents as you need to.
