    Recognizing Employee Donors (how to)

I work in a hospital where we have an employee giving campaign, capital campaigns, annual giving clubs and planned giving options. My question - if an employee gives to, say, a capital campaign - should that employee be listed under the employee giving campaign in addition to under the capital campaign? This is causing some stir in our office and I wanted to see how others handle such situations. Same thing - if an employee gives to an annual giving club, should they be listed under the employee giving campaign section as well?

To be recognized under each section, should the employee give under each area?

Thanks for your input. I appreciate it! Joelle J. Brown

This is why we did away with listing donors under sections, except for total giving groups. We have two hospitals and a community service program, and some donors give to all three!

We also have a group of employees who donate. We treat them just like any other donor and list them under the fund or campaign to which they gave. We do not have a special list for employees. Nina Williams The Cleveland Institute of Art www.cia.edu Making Art Work

We have both an employee annual giving club and capital campaign ... had the same problem with employees who give to the cc feel that they should be in the annual giving club too.... so we caved and now only print one employee listing and call it "Employee Giving" and employees are listed regardless of whether they are campaign gifts or annual club gifts Kathy Hannon Wuesthoff Health System Foundation [Email Removed] 321.637.2606

Where I was previously we listed all donors together but put a * next to the entries for employees. Melissa S. It seems that the donor should only be listed under the campaign to which he or she gave. So, if the donor gave to the annual giving club, he or she should be listed as a donor to that campaign, whether or not they happen to be an employee. The donor giving specifically to the employee giving campaign should be the only time the donor should be listed in that category, I would think. If the donor gave to multiple campaigns, then they deserve to be listed under all campaigns to which they contributed. If you are listing all employees who give under the employee list then you are giving unfair recognition since it looks like they donated to multiple campaigns, even when they only donated to one. Maybe you can do a survey of what your employee donors prefer in order to make your final decision.

Our faculty and staff are listed in our Annual Report in their own category, alphabetically. We have found that our employees do not wish to broadcast their individual generosity by being placed in our Gift Club Levels.

Thank you everyone for your feedback with this. This is still a hot topic in our office. A sub-question, if an employee gives x amount to a capital campaign and x amount to the employee giving campaign - should their gift be combined (totaled) and their name be placed in that combined giving level? I say we go away with giving levels all together... Joelle J. Brown Avera McKennan Foundation Sioux Falls, South Dakota [Email Removed]

I subscribe to the 'points are free' school of recognition. I don't think you can 'over-recognize' donors, but I do think you can under-appreciate them. Our organization isn't large enough for us to run concurrent campaigns so we would use an aggregate total. We recognize our employee donors annually by inviting them to a 'Breakfast Club' event if they donate $100 or more (in certain employee categories). They are also published in our annual report as Breakfast Club members and various newsletter types of publications as well as the website. When we have campaigns we have done a 'brass book' before listing each of our employee donors - this is placed in the registration/ help desk area of the main campus clinic. For what it is worth...If a donor donates to the capital campaign, they will be listed in the campaign listing at their campaign giving level. If the same donor also donates to our Annual campaign, the donor will be listed in Annual listing at their Annual giving level. We will list Cumulative Giving as well, and combine the 2 amounts at that level. Becky Creamer Eisenhower Medical Center Rancho Mirage, CA [Email Removed]
