    Payroll Deduction and Matching Gifts

I am hoping to develop a best practice for the following gift scenario: We receive a corporate emplyee giving check which includes: Employee #1: Payroll deduction gift and matching gift payment Employee #2: Matching Gift Payment Employee #3: Payroll deduction gift only My concern is re: Employee #1. We currently create a hard credit on the employee donor record for the portion that is their payroll deduction gift. We create a matching gift pledge for this gift and then commit it. The next step in our process is to enter the remaining balance of the corporate donation (minus the hard credit for the employee donor) and from that we pay off the matching gift pledges for Employees #1 and #2. A cash remainder is created through the process, which we then use to soft credit Employee #3 for their payroll deduction gift only. Is there a better process to handle a case like Employee #1? What do other organzations do with this type of corporate/employee donation check? I look forward to your input... Thanks! Karen Snyder GMCC Minneapolis, MN

    Payroll Deduction and Matching Gifts

It is becoming increasingly more common that companies send an employee gift and matching gift in one one check but RE has not caught up to this trend. The only workaround I have found is to enter them separately - employee portion on employee records with matching gifts if included or expected - committ the gift then enter any enclosed matching portion on the company record to pay the MG pledges. This means one check is split into many gifts which is not ideal for bank depositing reasons but it is the only way to do it while capturing the proper legal donors of each portion. It is not a solution but a workaround until BB deals with this issue. Melissa S. Thanks, Melissa! This is what I thought! It will be nice to have a RE solution one day! Could we address the case of Employee #2 who's portion of the corporate donation is simply a payroll deduction gift? Would you hard credit the employee for that gift or would you hard credit the corporation and soft credit the employee donor? Thanks! Karen GMCC Minneapolis, MN

Hard credits get receipts - soft credits only get thanked. A payroll deduction gift sent to you directly from the company is legally a gift from the donor so the gift would be hard credited to the individual and the company gets no credit. This would be different if the money is sent through another non-profit like a company foundation where the gift was made by the employee to the foundation and then a gift was made by the foundation to you. In that instance I would hard credit the foundation and then soft credit the individual. Melissa S.
