Help with transition to full year scheduling

I'm the registrar for a small high school (approx. 500 students). We currently have two semesters and (for some reason) we also schedule twice a year. The students get their fall schedules sent home over the summer and their spring schedules over the Christmas break. The second semester master schedule is done from scratch, even though most of our courses are two semesters in length. We are hoping to move to Full Year scheduling for the next school year. I know that scheduling once is the norm, but has anyone else gone through this transition? I was just looking for some advice, since I know it will be difficult for our first time through. One of our challenges will be to do a better job placing our freshmen students. For example, there are two science classes that ninth graders can take (Biology or Honors Biology). This year we had two sections of the regular in the fall. About 20 kids dropped from the honors into the regular course during the first marking period, which left us with two very large sections. So, we created 3 regular bio classes for the spring. I know that the master schedule can be edited, but I would imagine that this would be more difficult when everything else is already scheduled. Any recommendations for these types of pitfalls that we may encounter would be greatly appreciated. Tara Tatasciore Registrar/Math Teacher Archmere Academy Claymont DE 19801 [Email Removed]
