    Entering Online donations

I'd like to hera how other peopel resolve entering online donations or pledges from United Way and then resolve the pledge with the payment. Since the check that is received from United Way or a company like Groundspring is less than the pledges becasue of teh fees that are deducted, how do you resolve the totals that are different?

Here we enter into Raiser's Edge the full amout of the gift that the person made, eg. $35. Then when they are putting the gift into the accounting software, they record the donation debit the full amount to the fund it is given to ($35) and then credit cash for the amount received ($34) and fees for the fee taken out ($1). *Note: the debit/credit could be the reverse, I'm not an accountant so I often get those terms backwards. Hope that makes sense. Ginger

I was just going to post this same question this morning as I just received a check from groundspring. I wanted to know if entering the full gift amount prior to any fees should go in gift amount.

But in receipt amount we should put in the amt actually received after the fees.

I know for stock gifts there is the option to record any fees associated but I am not sure how to do this with online giving.

UW is a totally different story for us as we just record amount received.

Not familiar with groundspring but I would add the entire amount and give your acctg folks the info needed to book the bank fees. Your donor gets full credit (if groundspring isn't a non-profit itself). Your acctg dept records the bank fee and it offsets the difference in contribution income. I believe that groundspring has now merged with network for good but either way it is a 501 c 3 non-profit run by the Tides Foundation. The gift in question, therefore, is for the amount that you actually received (minus their fees) and it is legally from Groundspring/Network for Good not from the donor. You can use whatever method you want to thank and recognize the original donor but you can not receipt them or count them as a legal donor. Melissa S.
