    Networking Printers

This is sort of random but I thought I would ask in this forum since the people that use it are so intelligent and experienced. We just leased a number of high end copiers that are networked and will be placed in strategic locations around the school. Our intention is to remove all/most desktop printers from workstations for cost savings. The copiers all have hard drives in them so we can send printouts to the copier and then go to the copier later on to retrieve and print the copies. Has anyone else done a blanket removal of desktop printers from their school? I know there will be some screaming about this because it involves change. I am just looking for anyone who has been through this before. I think it is great for my large print jobs due to speed and cost. The only drawback is that I have to get up and walk down the hall. The exercise is good for me though. Norm Dunkin Landmark Christian School [Email Removed]

I WISH I could get people to do this; it would save SO much wasted paper on copies that never get picked up. Can't help you, but I admire and applaud the move.

We have used Network copiers/printers for the past 5 years with a great deal of success. We have limited individual printers for specific offices but our faculty and students use the network printer. The drawback we have concerning the student printouts is that we need to have a staff person to monitor the student printouts, but it works. Feel free to contact me if you have specific questions. We have removed printers from classrooms and only have area network printers. Administrative offices have printers, but we try to situate them in a place accessible to the administrative assistants and the actual administrators. We also have the issue of people printing and not picking the jobs up, but I think you'll have that with networked copiers, too. If anyone has a solution for that I'm all eyes. We have a few strategically placed networked laser printers around the campus and 2 color lasers also networked. I removed most of the individual desk jet type printers about a year after the network lasers went into place. There was some moaning and complaining, but it died out. We use a software product called PC Counter to control the number of copies that students and faculty can print each week. This significantly reduced the problem of wasted paper and "the job didn't come out so I'm going to send it 37 more times" I give faculty and staff 200 pages per week and students 35 pages per week. The product integrates with Active Directory, so as you add and remove people in AD, the people are added and subtracted from PC Counter. I also charge 2 pages for every color page printed, to deter "miscellaneous" prints to the color laser. You can add more pages to a person's weekly allotment in about 30 seconds, so if a student runs out of pages during the week for a legitimate reasons, such as printing college apps, I can "deposit" more pages. You add a printer to PC counter, so you can have certain Networked printers on PC counter, and others not on PC counter. I love the product and it is very cheap!!! http://www.pcounter.com.au/web/pcounter.html  Carolynn Parisi Technology Coordinator Mount Saint Mary Academy Watchung, NJ 07069 908-757-0108 x5001 Carolynn Parisi Mount Saint Mary Academy Watchung, NJ
