    Setting up Student Course Requests

The main reason we purchased NetClassroom was to assist in the mammoth task of entering student course requests to assist us with the Blackbaud Scheduler. The main problem we have found is there does not seem to be a way to restrict what courses a student can request other than simple GRADE LEVEL restrictions. We place strict limits on what options a student has based on their current enrollment and performance. We are looking for a way to limit course options for our students based upon a set of criteria. Core ciricula will not work as we have far too many scenarios to load and it would not be feasible. Does anyone else have this issue when it comes to Net ClassRoom course requests?

This is our first year to try and use the NetClassroom online course requests, so I don't have a solution to your problem, but anticipate having the same problem myself. I was told that you can have students enter their requests and then teachers/counselors can go back in and approve their requests or deny them -- that is what we were planning on doing as teachers must recommend students for certain classes based on their prior performance. I have also been updating all the pre-requisites for each course so that students will not be able to request a class if they do not have the correct pre-req. Does that help?

We have decied to go with Naviance Course Manager based on a presentation from them and having conversations with other schools that use it and Blackbaud. We will use the import and export features and have our kids register for classes through Naviance.

When we first used Netclassroom last spring, we had to work around the 'core curricula' thinking that went into the design. Just like your school, we have very few students working solely at grade level. To solve the problem, we created dummy courses to enroll recommended students and made the dummy course a prerequisite for the next level course. In the end we had students request courses by department (which were based on a query). If the student was not recommended for a course in the department and tried to request it, the student did not meet the prerequisite and received an message to that effect. The process was a little clunky given that we had to make Blackbaud work within the process used here, but we also saved days of data entry.
