    STORING OF CREDIT CARD NUMBERS!

I am wondering what other users do when they have a donation made by credit cards. Do you take payment and store credit card on RE if so what features do you use to protect the security of users seeing this data. Would it be best to just not store any credit cards on RE? We currently are storing credit card numbers, but don't actually have any use for them, other than for reference. However its up to me to decide whether we store or delete them. And to be honest i not quite sure, so i thought i would see how other users deal with this situation. STORING OF CREDIT CARD NUMBERS!

RE has two places to store the credit card number. They are linked together. The numbers can be stored in the BIO 2 Tab. We store the number in the gift as it is entered or in the pledge if there is a recurring charge. If you are in the gift or pledge change the pay method to Credit Card and hit F7 the screen in Bio 2 appears. Entering the data here puts it in both places as they are linked. If you hit F7 while enterig a gift it will also show you the numbers already in BIO 2. I feel it is important to at least have the nubmer in the gift in the event the consitutent calls and wants to know what number was charged. We also have had situatios we were to authorized to charge the card on file. Security: This can be set so only certain uses can see the number. Hope this helps. [Email Removed]

Our organization does not like to keep electronic copies of credit card numbers for security reasons so I use the “Other” option for Payment Type and enter the abbreviated credit card type and last four digits of the credit card number in the reference number field of the gift (for example: AmEx 4569 or MC 1234) and the expiration in the date field. This has worked well for us. It allows us to give the donor enough information (if they call) without actually keeping the full number on file (which gives them a level of comfort that their number cannot be pulled from our database should someone get past all our firewall and security measures). I think that anyone not using the EFT module can do this but in my opinion the EFT module is such a time saver and works so well I'd never give it up. If you have any kind of a recurring gift program and are doing it manually or doing it twice in 2 systems) than you may want to consider the EFT module.

No one in my agency can see credit cards but me and the DE person. We are on 7.8 so the numbers are encrypted in the database and our IT dept is such a stickler about security (being a healthcare organization) I trust the firewall as much as you can trust a firewall so I feel confident about security.
