    Using Grants vs. Projects

Maybe it's me, but it seems like Grants is redundant if you use Projects. What do folks use them for? We're set up so that Projects contains our endowment funds. If we set up Grants, it looks like we have to attach it to a Project anyway, so why bother?

    Using Grants vs. Projects

Hi Joanne, I believe this is used for those who use the projects module to track actual projects. If a group were to have say a building project, they would set it up and track any grants that were received from an outside source toward that project. They could then report to the grantor how that money was used. Hope that helps :)

    Using Grants vs. Projects

I've just begun using Projects as the subledger for my restricted funds, and I'm pretty confused. I didn't get asset balances that carried over after the last fiscal year, and can't figure out what entries will get those balances in.

Joanne, We use project codes for specific projects/programs. Our unrestricted, temporarily restricted, and permanently restricted (endowment) funds are tracked by the first two digits in our account number 10-xxxx-xx where 10 is unrestricted, 20 is temporarily restricted, 30 is permanently restricted, etc. We would use grants for specific, individual grants from an organization, individual, etc.

    Using Grants vs. Projects

We've been using projects for years for our grants. It eleiminates a huge chart of accounts. Before we converted to RE 7 the project balances closed to each project and there was no problem. When we converted to RE7 all of the projects close to the fund balance in one account. The way we have overcome this problem is by reversing the entry so that the asset balances are current. I hope this helps.

    Multiple grants for one project

I have used Blackbaud G/L since 1998. This is the first time I heard that grants are different from projects. I am interested in using the grants feature, since we currently don't know how to track individual grants tied to a project. I have to do this manually in Excel. Can you please tell me where in Financial Edge the grants code or attribute appears? We also have Raiser's Edge. Mark, I believe grants is an additional module you can purchase--we don't currently have it. I am just beginning to track grants via the transaction attributes--Attribute Type=Grants, Data Type=Table, Table Name=Transaction Codes 2. This allows the opportunity to use quite a few grants. I believe utilizing this method enables you to run reports for each specific grant.

    Multiple grants for one project

This reply is intended for anyone reading this message board. We do currently have the Projects, Grants, and Endowment module. We have had it since before I started working here in 1998. We have used it continuously over the years. Given that I am an experienced user with project codes in Financial Edge, this is the first time I have heard that multiple grants can be tied to a single project code. Does anyone know how this is done? Thank you, Mark Brockman Star of Hope Mission
