Is anyone out there aware of the requirement by non-profits to register in each state where they plan to raise money, and that most, if not all, states you register with require certain disclosure text to appear on all solicitations, receipts, and follow-up correspondence? Does anyone out there work for an organization that raises funds in multiple states? If so, who and how do you handle the multi-state filing process? I work for a nonprofit healthcare organization which has facilities in both Delaware and Florida, and we raise funds in those states and in some of the neighboring states around each location. We only recently became aware of the requirement to file, and we have filed in several states, but are finding the process very cumbersome. I am currently the one in our organization who is handling the filing process, and I am the database manager for Raiser's Edge. I was looking to see how other organizations handle this process, and which department within the organization handles it? Is it appropriate for development staff to be doing this, or should it be someone from finance, or legal? If anyone has any thoughts or informatin to share about this, I'd love to hear from you. I have only heard of this in reference to fundriaising by telephone or telemarketing. Since I am only a statewide organization when we telemarket it is only for CT but the vendor we use does the filing for us. (we sign it but they prepare it and mail it) *** I can spell, I just can't type. Where is spell check? Melissa S. We solicit funds on our web site, therefore we have to register in every state. You are right it is very cumbersome and unfortunately every state has their own rules and forms. I work in accounting and I do all the state registrations. Laura Roberts Accounting Manager The Woodrow Wilson Nat'l Fellowship Fdn 5 Vaughn Drive, Suite 300 Princeton, NJ 08540

Now we were told that if you solicit over the internet, then that is exempt. Our big problem is with the annual financial reporting. Our fiscal years ends on 12/31, but 990 is usually not ready until November of the following year, which makes us have to apply for extensions and incur late fees. What a nitemare!
