    VSE and Deferred Gifts

How do you enter deferred gifts (Face Value: 100,000; Present Value 48,026) into the Raiser’s Edge system? I’m new to this office and running the VSE Survey report. My totals from Section 3.d and Section 4.a. are off by exactly the amount entered in section 3.c. which is my deferred gift present value. In looking then into Raiser’s Edge, the present value was (before me) entered as a “Cash” gift for tax purposes to the donor. Thus, it is already getting counted into the cash flow sections of 3.b. by the VSE Survey report so my entering it into section 3.c. is double counting it, thus I don't balance. I’m waiting also on word from our accountant but, I also wanted to hear from a Raiser’s Edge user who is doing the VSE as to how they record these gifts into the Raiser’s Edge system. If recorded as cash, then how do you exclude them from the VSE Survey Report program.

The good thing about the VSE report is that it will get you to ALMOST where you need to be. Deferred Gifts were always a pain for me. (In addition to some other tweaks that I had to do to balance the report). I would just reduce the cash gifts by the deferred gift amount - especially since you know exactly where the difference is coming from. To make sure that the bottom line is correct I run a gift summary by gift type, by campaign, by fund and by constituency code. That way if you have 4 different ways to get to the same total then you can indeed validate the grand totals on the report. Why not entere it a a pledge - since it is not realized currently at any value. Of if that does not work use Gift type of Other and exclude those from the VSE. I do the VSE report for my school - but I don't use the Raiser's Edge Canned reports because they don't correctly sort according to the constituent requirements of the VSE. The sort constituient by table order does not consider the from and two dates on the constituent record before deciding which constituencies are valid for the reporting period before sorting it the mandatory order for the VSE.
