    Individuals vs. Family Foundations?

When entering a gift through a check that comes in to your organization with the Family Foundation on the check, do you credit it to the individual and note that the check is from the Family Foundation? Or do you create a record for the Family Foundation and soft credit the individual? We create a record for the Family Foundation that has a relationship both to the individual and to any third party (like a community foundation) that hosts the family foundation. Then we soft-credit the individual and the third party. Trish Morgan Associate Director Pathways Hospice Foundation [Email Removed]

We do as Trish does. The hard credit goes to the organization/individual whose name is on the check. Soft credit goes to the family/individual who directed the family foundation to make the gift to you. There is also good historical discussion of this topic in the archives on this forum.
