    Formatting Phone Numbers

I searched in knowledgebase to see if there is a certain standard way phone numbers should be entered in RE and couldn't find an answer. Should one use: (###) ###-#### Or: ###-###-### What do you use?

While many people are now using a "dotted notation" (I got a real chuckle out of seeing just such a phone number in Krys's signature line), the standard for any North American phone number is (###) ###-####. That said, I think the original question is how to ENTER the phone number and the answer to that is to type in ##########. Don't attempt to format the number when entering it. Let RE do the formatting. Otherwise you can easily wind up with all kinds of inconsistencies (two spaces between the close parenthesis and the next digit for instance). Keeping phone number data consistent is CRITICAL if you want to be able to easily perform a global change when a new area code is added in the future. John Heizer

We use ###-###-#### for RE, but for all publicly displayed phone numbers (in appeals, ads, etc.) we use the dotted format - it looks better, we think. (Perhaps it's a San Francisco Bay Area thing, since Krys & I are about 4 miles apart.) That being said, you can format RE to do either parentheses or dashes. There is no official standard that I am aware of. Trish Morgan Associate Director Pathways Hospice Foundation [Email Removed]

John, perhaps you could clarify something for me: If I enter the entire phone number in just like xxxxxxxxxx, RE will format it for me? WHEN? I tried it on a new entry, and it didn't format it. Is it something I need to adjust in Admin or Config first? Thanks for your input! p.s. I can tell I'm "old". I think the dots in phone numbers look pretentious - although I'm fairly sure the dots will eventually win out. Once upon a time, people used to hyphenate thank-you. Configuration - Tables - Phones Types is where you can choose your formatting. Open the phone type and format as desired. Denise Stengl School Sisters of St. Francis Milwaukee, WI [Email Removed] Don't forget to check out the RE Users Forum at: http://www.reusers.server-planet.com/forum.php
