We use The\name as in: The\California Endowment The name prints out normally as "The California Endowment", but in the search you simply would use "california endowment". Nicole D. Enter a \ instead of the space between the "The" and the next word in the name. For intsance The Prudential would be The\Prudential. It will still put the space in for mailings and such, but it will search on the second word of the name. We use the backslash \ where ever we want the sort to begin. It also dictates how your search results will come up. It may be different for different organizations. You need to write the title as "The \then the name", once you press save you will see at the top that \ doesn't show. This allows you to search for the first word after "the". The other option is to make it an alias without the "The" at the beginning and check the "check alias" box when you do searches. I personally prefer the first option.

We use this for foundations with "the". But we also use alias function for organizations or foundations that have long cumbersome names. For example: "The John and Elsie Smith Foundation for ...." I make an alias for this by using "Smith" which makes this easier to find. A user may not always remember the full name of the organization but would most likely remember a primary word or words in the name. [Email Removed]

This is the solution but has anyone noticed that when exporting you do not get the \ (thankfully) but you also do not get the appropriate sortkey or sort name for organizations with the word The. The \ character ignores anything preceding it. So it does sort accordingly. Thus, The Joel\Smith Foundation sorts under "S" and if one tried to find it by typing Joel, it would not be found whereas The\Joel Smith Foundation sorts under "J". Make sure if you use the \ character, to add in aliases for the org names so you can always find what you're looking for

That's not quite right at least in our version. You can search on either the first part of the entire name, or the first part after the \. If you searched for "The Joel" or "Smith" you should find your record. You can't find it by looking for "Joel", because that does not match the start of either string. How this works in the back end is that the entire name is stored in the Records table with the "\" replaced with a space. An entry is also placed in the Alias table with just the part after the "\". If you search for "The Joel", it will find it based on the entry in the Records table; if you search for "Smith", it will find it based on the entry in the Alias table.
