Database Administrator/Manager Employee Status

I would appreciate any feedback on what your employee status (exempt or non-exempt) is as a RE Database Administrator or Database Manager.

Our staff of 5 are all exempt. I don't have a title of DB manager (although I've been trying to get my title/salary upgraded for years.) On that note, If anybody would be willing to please email me offline a sample of a db manager, etc job description so maybe I could prove there are others out there!! and this is a valid job title :) Thank you!! Database Administrator/Manager Employee Status

I am also a non-exempt database manager. What are the pluses and minuses of these classifications? Mark F. DeWitt, Database Manager College of Engineering University of California, Berkeley

I think the position (and it depends on the work actually being done, not the title) would qualify as an exempt position although entities may pay exempt positions as if they were non-exempt if they wish.

Some pluses are more hour accruals for PTO than non-exempt, no PTO time has to be used for appointments, sick leave (less than a whole day). There are really no minuses for me other than sometimes my boss threatens that he can work me 24 hours a day if he wants to. We basically are exempt because we all have to put in extra hours at special events, or have to have very flexible schedules and this relieves the problems with over-time or people who could say they don't want to work the extra hours, they have to.

I think that it really depends on where you work. I work for a college and in doing so my job is not always my 8 am - 6 pm on weekdays. But I am salary based.

I am sure that a database managers does a lot more than what is listed in the discription below. (I know I do) But this is what I have plus some... Data entry, running reports, and etc... and I work for a college also, and I am hourly. That is just the way that the school has it... Job Description Database Administrator/manager - Administers, maintains, develops and implements policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of the company database. Implements data models and database designs, data access and table maintenance codes; resolves database performance issues, database capacity issues, replication, and other distributed data issues. May require a bachelor's degree in a related area and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Works under general supervision; typically reports to a manager. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. --- Edited at 3/1/2006 3:22:38 PM by Heather Dingman
