Meshing RE Fund Codes with a Chart of Accounts

I'm having trouble meshing the RE Fund Codes to my Chart of Accounts. The RE Fund codes developed by our development department do not specify whether the gift comes from Foundation, Corporate or Individual source. But, our organization budgets that way and I need to have these sources reflected in the postings to the general ledger. The RE people claim that it is too cumbersome to divide all of their "funds" by source. What do other organizations do about this?

Why not have Devlopment folks add a gift attribute as a required data entry field....That way there is only one fund but the attribute can tell you what the source is. I might use sub-fund in FE to capture this rather than having separate funds.....not sure how that works for budgeting, though. I do both RE and FE at my org....(ughhh) and it seems like an easy fix. We also have the projects, grants & endowments module and have our fund code in RE equal projects in FE. Hillary Murphy Financial Administrator Phoebe Foundation

Perhaps I'm not clear on why you would want to dissect your funds by donor source? This is what I generally go by: Fund - this is the actual financial ledger/account that the money goes to (restricted or unrestricted) The fund has nothing to do with how a donation is received. Examples of Funds: Heart Care Education Annual Fund Fund Categories can be used to group multiple funds into groupings for reporting etc. if there is a reason to do so: Example of Categories: Donor Advised Funds Unrestricted Restricted Endowments Constituent Code - This is the 'source' or relationship of the donor to your organization Constituent Code examples: Corporation Individual- Public Non-profit I hope this helps If you do it this way - you can use demographic and statistical reports for budgeting. We use Projects that tie to Development's funds. Projects let you set up different types that may solve your problem. You can budget by project, too.

We have to same issue. We had to set up Gift sub-types to reflect the donor type which also correspond to an account number. For example, all individual giving is coded to account number 4200. Therefore, when we set up GL distribution tab, we set up a debit and credit for each subtype. I'll be happy to share the GL Distribution tab grid from one of our funds.
