What's this SHARING thing all about?

Pardon my jumping right into this, but I'm confused!

At first I thought it meant, for example, a son and parent, who were sharing, or "have" the same address. That to me is sharing. However, now I understand that "sharing" seems to be if you'll let another record be privy to that information. Why would I want to do that anyway?

So, can anyone succinctly explain this concept to me? Blackbaud couldn't!

Apparently, since I didn't fully understand the meaning of this term, my records aren't matching, e.g, if you're in a student constituent record and click under relationships on "parent," the window that pops up is like the mini-window. The information on the mini-record under phone types does not match that same information on the real record because I do not have this sharing thing set up right.

    Help!!! and Thanks!

Don't feel bad...your not alone. I came across this a little while back. I even call support and ended up coming up with my own work around. We have lodges and members in our system. I would add the individuals then give them a relationship to the lodge. Little did I know that the address was sharing it's self with everyone else that belonged to that lodge and the lodges address. So if you were to make a change you could end up accidently changing everyones. Oopps...Big Oopps!!! We know have to go open the lodges record go to the relationship tab and the individual information there then make them a constituent. Totally crazy but I guess that is how is has to be so that we don't have everyone sharing all of these address and phone numbers. I don't know if this really answers your questions but this is what I have to do because of the "sharing stuff"!!! Staci J. Staci, You do not have to share addresses and you don't have to make constituents out of contacts with different addresses. When you add a new contact the default address is the organization address. You can change the contacts address then when you are asked if you wish to change all records or this record only select the latter. Michael J. I think I have done what you are talking about but it still gives me problems when I want to change and address. If the constituent moves I don't want to have to change it on their main constituent record and the record that shows up under the lodge. If I bring up the lodge and look at the relationships tab and see the addresses for the realationships unless I do it the way I am doing it, I will only see the organization's address not their address. According to RE support when you reciprocate it is what causes it. If I want I can add them as a constituent don't reciprocate and then go to the organization's record then relationship tab and add them there but not reciprocate it there either. But then I have to Tools, Address/sharing and share the address. I have I lost you yet?!?!?! Staci J. Maine Coordinator, Donor Programs The Ohio Masonic Home Benevolent Endowment Foundation, Inc.
