Gifts from United Way or Local Independent Charities Campaigns

We currently received money via Local Independent Charities and United Way Campaigns. When constituents give, a percentage is taken off for administrative purposes by these organizations, thus the actual amount we receive is smaller. How do you record these gives...from the donor or from the organization. What if the organization does not tell you the donor or tells you the donor but not the amount. Do you record the donors initial amount, or the amount after the administrative fees. We want to make sure that the donors we do know get recognized in the annual report.

We record the gift on the United Way's Org record ( for the amount of the check). If we know the donors demographic info we set up an ind. constituent and soft-credit them so they can be pulled into any recognition vehicles we do. We may also send them a letter thanking them for the gift but we do not list the dollar amount. The United Way is legally responsible for the Tax credit documentation so we do not send them end of year tax documentation. BB75014 in the Knowledgebase contains a discussion of this topic. We records the gift hard cash credit to the UW account. We record the gift as type Other full amount to donor (if we have their name)to track their propensity and capacity to give. The % taken out of each of the individual gifts is seen as part of the cost of doing business and is not track in RE.
