Splitting a Merged field in Word

We use Windows XP with Office XP and we're having trouble splitting a merge fields - some people's Position title is too long for one line, but when we hit return where we want it to go to the next line, it won't stay that way. It will only keep the field at the top. Anyone else run into this? Better yet, anyone else have a solution? :)

Are you trying to break the line before or after you merge? If you are trying before then it won't work but you can fix things after you merge them and they should stay. Melissa G. Melissa S. Graves Databse Administrator Planned Parenthood of Connecticut [Email Removed] 203-752-2804

We're trying to break the line after we merge in the merged document - making changes only where they need to happen. It will let us set the cursor in the middle of the Position and hit return, but when we flip to the next letter and go back, the changes are not saved and it is all on one line again. I think it has to do with the way XP performs the merge. Even though we're saving the merged document to its own file, other people need to have access to the data file itself in order to view the already merged document. It's quite odd.

That does not sound like it is completely merged. If it still is conected to the data then it isn't. That is too wierd. It doesn't work that way in Word97 or Word2000. Melissa G. Melissa S. Graves Databse Administrator Planned Parenthood of Connecticut [Email Removed] 203-752-2804

I know. If you ever go to XP, be ready to put a little time into re-learning merge functions. There are a lot of differences in Office XP that seem counter-intuitive and are a bit tricky. I try to think positive and give them the benefit of the doubt that there must be some underlying logic but sometimes...
