Import new addresses while maintaining current phone numbers

Has anyone found a way to import new addresses while maintaining the phone numbers found in the current (and soon to be old) address?

I actually need to figure out how do the opposite: import new phone numbers (e-mail, cell, business type phone numbers) to the current address. I'm not certain if the "update existing records" checkbox in import setup overwrites the old data or just appends data to fields that are empty. If not, you'll probably have to globally delete all those address records (if you can) and then import your file, provided you have the import ID or CID in the file.

     Pat,

For the process below, use "constituent import" rather than "constituent address import".

here's what I'd do: Import your constituent IDs alone, (a single column spreadsheet) and check the box to create a query from the imported records.

Create an import file using just those constituents. Include in your import file all of the phone# and address info you want.

Delete the address import ID#s, keep the column that specifies "preferred address = true" assuming that's what you want, and then paste the new address data over the old address data. Since you are not importing over an existing address you will end up creating a new constituent address, and the old address will become non preferred. Raiser's Edge will create new address import IDs with new address records.

     John,

Here are the columns you need for a constituent Import that does what you want. (last 4 columns can be omitted)

Import ID is constituent's import ID, AddrImpID and PhoneAddrImpID are both the address import ID of the address you want to add a phone# to. (probably the constituent's preferred address).

ImportID AddrImpID PhoneAddrImpID PhoneImpID PhoneType PhoneNum PhoneAddrImpID PhoneImpID PhoneType PhoneNum
