We are adding a secure, password-protected alumni directory to our website and I'm curious about how others have gone about it. We have the option of uploading home and business contact information and leaving it to the alumni to hide all or some of the data at their discretion, to upload the same data in a hidden state and allow the alumni to release the data at their discretion or to upload minimal data - name, class year, etc., and rely on the alumni to complete their contact information if they wish. In all cases, we would notify the alumni by mail in advance and offer them the opportunity to opt out. If you have such a directory and would be willing to provide some insight, I'd appreciate it! Thanks

Hi,
When we did this a number of years ago we uploaded everything but kept it hidden unless the alum "released" it. I know we did name and class year as public info (and possibly major - we're a college) and the rest was all hidden. And I would strongly suggest that you do not have contact info, where people live and work, etc openly available. I know I have people from high school I'd rather not be in contact with and if they could track me down through a school sponsored web site I would not be happy.
My 2 cents,
laura
Thanks, Laura. Privacy is our concern, too. We're getting a variety of opinons and will weigh them all.
