We would like to start entering ask amounts on contituents records. If you are currently doing this, I'd be interested to learn where specifically in the records you are putting the ask amount and what reports you are using.

When we ran our last capital campaign we needed ask amounts. The goal figure in the solicitor assignment is an option if all your prospective donors are assigned out to solicitors as one of the first steps of the process.
For us we needed ask amounts printed in prospective donor packets before prospects were assigned. We spoke to several BB support staff about where to record this (we don't have prospect module - I'd guess there's a place there). We created an attribute of 'Campaign XYZ Ask Amount.' We entered figures there and could export it to materials we were printing.
To have amount included in a report, I think we had to export fields we wanted.
We usually don't place the amounts on the donor record - but I would suggest the Target Field on the BIO 2 tab if you don't have the prospect module.
We do use suggested amount on some of our direct mail pieces and that we do via export using last gift information and you can format that to do a % or dollar value increase.
We do use solicitors so the goal ask amount is in there for those assigned solicitors.
We used the Proposal tab, which you get when purchasing the Prospect module.
