I work at a small liberal arts college and pull mailing lists for events and solicitations. I have a request for a mailing to only music majors. I want to join the list so only one brochure is mailed to a household. If there is a couple where both of them were music majors, Head of Household will apply. However, if there is a couple where one of them was a music major and the other was a biology major who also happens to be Head of Household, Head of Household will not work. I want to mail to the music major not to the biology major.

I have a couple of thoughts

1) Scrap Head of Household and mail to every music major individually addressing them separately

2) Run list ads above and export into a program like excel or access where you can look for duplicate addresses and manually edit those to be a couple - deleting 1 record.

Maybe someone else will have something better...

You would think/hope that that would be easy to do!  But looking at the general tab for labels it's not. 

If I had to do the list, I think I'd export to excel, include field listing major and HOH field.  Those fields would help in manually cleaning up the file.  Doesn't look like there's an easy answer for this one.

Actually in this case, HOH would still work.  HOH only looks at constituents INCLUDED in the mailing.  So if you have a query of all of your music majors and you base the mailing on that query, HOH only applies to those couples where BOTH constituents are in the query.  So it only applies for those couples who were both music majors.  If there is a couple where one was a music major and one was a bio major, ONLY the music major would be included in the query.  Therefore HOH doesn't apply to them, it will just mail to the constituent included in the query.  So it's alot easier than it seems :-).  Please let me know if that doesn't make sense or you have a question about this!
