Food bank donations tracked in RE?

I also put this on Blackbus.  Are other food bank non-profits tracking in-kind food donations in RE?  Are there best practices out there for tracking food bank donations in the database or are the in-kind donations handled by finance?  It looks like many food banks have gone to a pounds-of-food tracking system instead of using FMV.  Does the IRS require one method or the other?  I'm just starting my research and have not checked the IRS site yet.  Any insight would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Re: Food bank donations tracked in RE?

     Hi there-

We are just now switching over to track small food donations (mostly from companies/individual drives) through RE. We will be tracking by poundage. It's more for receipting purposes, than IRS stuff...these are pretty small dirves (2 or 3 bags). The larger food donations are tracked and receipted through Macola. I'm in Development, not the Food Group, so I don't really know all teh details of that side of things... but I am working closely with them on setting up RE for them to track food drives.

Feel free to contact me for more info...
